Professional Canon digital cameras and SLR cameras allow you to save photos in .CR2 format. In addition to the actual image, this format contains further information such as exposure time and the various colour channels. This is why the .cr2 format is also referred to as a RAW format (English: raw file). With specialised software, it is possible to edit .cr2 images retrospectively – specifically, basic image properties such as sharpness, hue, white balance, contrast or saturation. However, this is sometimes not necessary at all, and the specialised software may not be to hand. If you simply wish to convert a file from CR2 to JPG, this can be done with little effort using File-Converter-Online.com. Simply upload your Canon CR2 file, select the output format and click on "Start download".

The CR2 extension in a filename indicates the raw data format of images from Canon cameras. Raw data, usually referred to as RAW files, is, so to speak, the negative of digital photography. The JPEG image is typically developed from the raw data whilst still in the camera. Basic cameras only save the finished JPEG. This saves storage space and the time required to save files to the card. With more expensive cameras, there is the option to keep both RAW and JPG, or even to save only the RAW format. With Canon, in the latter case, you would therefore only find a CR2 file on the storage medium, not a JPG.

Compared to JPEG, the CR2 format offers significant advantages for digital image processing. Even in the days of chemical photography, no serious photographer would have thrown away their negatives once they had the prints in their hands. Of particular note are the wider dynamic range and the ability to adjust camera settings—which only affect JPEG processing—at your leisure on the computer. In post-processing, you have far more options for darkening highlights, brightening shadows or altering lighting moods via white balance.

For this work, you need a specialised raw data converter. Basic programmes are usually supplied by the camera manufacturer. Paid software such as Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, DxO Optics, Silkypix Developer Studio or the Camera RAW filter in Adobe Photoshop offers a far greater range of functions. As freeware, RAW Therapy regularly achieves outstanding test results. What all these programmes have in common is that they require a learning curve. Due to the multitude of settings available, a JPEG cannot be produced in a flash; it takes time.

The proprietary CR2 format is like a traditional negative: the options for viewing it are limited, and not every device can display it without additional software. To stick with the negative analogy: sharing it is even more difficult. However, this does not solve the problem of converting to a universally usable format. Furthermore, the structure of RAW files depends on the specific camera model. Software for viewing and converting must be constantly updated for new camera models. Conversely, this also means that there is no guarantee you will still be able to view or edit raw data from older cameras in a few years’ time. With formats from major camera manufacturers such as Canon CR2, Nikon NEF or Olympus ORF, the risk is low, but even well-known names like Minolta have already had to exit the market.

There are therefore plenty of reasons to convert CR2 files into a format with wider distribution and compatibility.

  • You are a Canon photographer and, in addition to the raw file, would like to archive a future-proof format that can still be read many years from now.
  • You haven’t saved a JPG ‘straight from the camera’, but need to share images quickly and without time-consuming processing, for example when ordering paper prints or other items from a photo shop or an online service.
  • You do not use a Canon camera and therefore do not have any compatible software installed on your computer.

The best target format for conversion is JPEG, usually abbreviated to the three letters JPG. The abbreviation stands for the Joint Photographic Experts Group and actually refers to a compression method that was standardised as early as 1992. This de facto standard is recognised by virtually all software and is usually the only format you can submit to a photo lab if you wish to order prints, photo books or photo gifts. JPEG differs from the similarly standardised TIFF format in that it requires significantly less storage space.

Online conversion from CR2 to JPG is quick and hassle-free, avoiding the effort involved in full raw file processing. The result is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. The original camera settings are not lost and can be included with the raw file as base information for the conversion.
